- 1/2 C butter, softened
- 1/2 C shortening
- 1 C powdered sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 tsp almond extract
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 1/2 C flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp red food coloring
- 1/2 C crushed peppermints
- 1/2 C white sugar
Preheat oven to 375.
Mix butter, shortening, powdered sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla.
Slowly add in the flour and salt.
Divide dough in half. Blend a tsp of red food coloring into one half of the dough. (Be sure dough isn’t too dry or food coloring won’t mix in.)
Roll one piece from each half of the dough (red and white) into a “worm” shape. (Use about 1-2 Tbs each color for this.) Wrap the pieces around each other, then bend them into a cane form. It should look like a candy cane!
Place each cookie onto a foil-lined cookie sheet. Bake for 9 minutes, until very light brown on bottom.
Mix the crushed peppermints and granulated sugar in a shallow bowl or pie dish. Dip fronts of cookies into mixture after baking.
